Canada Map Activities: Provinces, Territories and Capitals
Help students become familiar with the map of Canada through province-and-territory labelling activities.
Students identify the provinces and territories, then build on that learning by locating their capital cities. These Canada map activities provide opportunities to practise geographical vocabulary, recognize locations and connect place names with their positions on a map.
Use the activities during your Canadian geography lessons or revisit them as students research individual provinces and territories.
Explore First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples
The included Indigenous Peoples map activity introduces First Nations, Métis and Inuit as part of students’ learning about Canada.
It provides a starting point for classroom conversations about Indigenous Peoples and their relationships with the land. Extend the activity by learning about the specific Nations and communities connected to the places your students are studying.
First Nations, Métis and Inuit are distinct Peoples, with diverse cultures, languages and histories. Broad map categories are an introduction to further learning.
Physical Regions of Canada
Introduce students to seven physical regions of Canada with the included lesson and map labelling activity.
This section adds another layer to students’ geographical understanding. Alongside learning the provinces and territories, students explore how Canada can be studied through its physical regions.
Use the lesson to introduce the topic, then give students an opportunity to apply their learning through the regions labelling activity.
Flags and Province-and-Territory Research
Continue the learning with a flags worksheet and 13 individual worksheets—one for each province and territory.
The worksheets give students a place to record research and reflect on what they have learned. Assign different provinces and territories to students, use the pages alongside classroom lessons or work through them over the course of your geography unit.
Together, the mapping, flag and research activities offer several ways for students to explore Canada and demonstrate their understanding.
English and French Included
The resources are included in both English and French, giving you options for English-language, French-language and French immersion classrooms.
Choose the language version that fits your teaching needs while keeping the same Canadian geography topics at the centre of the learning.
