Poppy Wreath Craft: 2 Remembrance Day Classroom Activities

Planning a class poppy wreath for your school’s Remembrance Day assembly? A poppy wreath craft gives every student a way to contribute to something your class can share together.

It can also bring cultural learning into your November plans. As a First Nations educator and artist, I created two printable poppy wreath activities that connect remembrance with learning about Métis beadwork or Northwest Coast art.

Both resources include class and individual wreath options, so you can prepare one wreath for your assembly or create a Remembrance Day classroom display.

1. Métis Dot Art Poppy Wreath

My Métis Dot Art Poppy Wreath craft begins with an introduction to Métis beadwork. Students then use painted dots to create poppy art inspired by the appearance of beadwork.

Begin with the included lesson so students understand the connection between the art they are learning about and the project they are creating. The classroom activity uses dot painting; students are learning about beadwork through a different medium.

The resource includes:

  • A Métis Dot Art lesson and introduction to beadwork
  • Multiple printable poppy templates
  • A collaborative class poppy wreath activity
  • Individual poppy wreath craft options

Choose this activity if you want to bring painting and pattern work into your Remembrance Day art. Allow time for the painted poppies to dry before assembling your class wreath.

2. Northwest Coast Art Poppy Wreath

My Northwest Coast Art Poppy Wreath craft introduces students to art shapes and design elements before they begin their wreath.

The included lesson and tracing activity give students time to look closely at the shapes they will use. Keep the cultural context connected to the project: Northwest Coast art belongs to distinct First Nations cultures.

This resource includes:

  • A Northwest Coast art lesson
  • An art shape tracing activity
  • Multiple printable wreath templates
  • Collaborative class and individual poppy wreath craft activities

Choose this option if you want to include shape recognition and tracing practice alongside your Remembrance Day learning.

Making a Class Poppy Wreath for Your Assembly

With either resource, begin with the art lesson, then use the class wreath option so each student can contribute a poppy. Follow the resource’s assembly directions and prepare the finished wreath for your school’s Remembrance Day assembly.

Before sharing it, invite students to discuss what they learned. You might display a short class reflection beside the wreath or have students prepare a few sentences to explain their work.

For a bulletin board or hallway display, choose the individual wreath templates and arrange students’ artwork together.

Include Indigenous Veterans in Your Remembrance Day Learning

Indigenous Veterans Day on November 8 and Remembrance Day on November 11 offer opportunities to learn about First Nations, Métis and Inuit Veterans.

Pair your poppy wreath craft with a Veteran’s story so students understand who they are remembering.
