Indigenous Veterans Day Lesson for Primary Students

Indigenous Veterans Day is observed across Canada on November 8. It honours the service and sacrifices of First Nations, Métis and Inuit Veterans.

Many Indigenous Veterans served while facing discrimination in Canada. Some returned from military service to unequal access to benefits, support and land. This lesson helps primary students begin understanding why Indigenous Veterans Day is recognized and why these Veterans deserve greater acknowledgement.

Remembrance Day Poppy Writing Craft

After completing the lesson and biographies, students respond to four Indigenous Veterans Day writing prompts. Their writing is added to an interactive poppy craft that can be used for individual reflection or a collaborative classroom display.

The poppy activity combines social studies, literacy and art while giving students an opportunity to share what they have learned about Indigenous Veterans.
