Explore the Seven Sacred Teachings
Students are introduced to the seven teachings and their animal connections:
♡ Love: Eagle
♡ Respect: Buffalo
♡ Courage: Bear
♡ Honesty: Sabe/Sasquatch
♡ Wisdom: Beaver
♡ Humility: Wolf
♡ Truth: Turtle
Each animal provides a visual connection that helps primary students remember and reflect on the teaching.
Teachings, stories and animal associations can vary among Indigenous communities and Knowledge Keepers. This resource presents one commonly shared version of the Seven Sacred Teachings. It should not be presented as a universal belief held by all First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples.
Love: The Eagle
Students explore love and consider what it means to show care for themselves and others.
The included self-love jar of feathers activity encourages students to recognize positive qualities, practise self-kindness and reflect on the importance of love.
Respect: The Buffalo
Students learn about respect and consider how their words and actions affect other people, animals and the world around them.
The activity encourages students to identify ways they can demonstrate respect at school, at home and in their community.
Courage: The Bear
Students explore what it means to have courage.
They consider how courage can include trying something new, standing up for what is right, asking for help or continuing through a difficult experience.
Honesty: Sabe
Students learn about honesty through Sabe, also commonly described as Sasquatch.
Students consider the importance of being honest with themselves and others, keeping their word and acting with integrity.
Wisdom: The Beaver
Students explore wisdom and consider how people use their knowledge, abilities and experiences to make thoughtful choices.
The beaver helps students understand the importance of using their individual gifts in positive and helpful ways.
Humility: The Wolf
Students learn that humility does not mean thinking poorly of themselves.
The wolf helps illustrate that each person is an important part of a larger family, classroom and community. Students reflect on working with others and recognizing everyone’s contributions.
Truth: The Turtle
Students explore truth and consider how all seven teachings work together.
The turtle helps students understand that living truthfully involves practising love, respect, courage, honesty, wisdom and humility in their everyday lives.
My Seven Sacred Teachings Booklet
Students create their own Seven Sacred Teachings booklet to collect and review what they have learned.
The booklet provides a place to record each teaching, its animal connection and personal reflections. Students can use it throughout the lessons and take it home when the unit is complete.
Social-Emotional Learning and Personal Reflection
These 7 Sacred Teachings activities naturally connect with social-emotional learning and character education.
