Inuit Culture Activities and Indigenous Winter Art Bundle

Looking for meaningful Inuit culture activities and Indigenous winter art projects? This comprehensive bundle combines lessons about Inuit life in Canada’s Arctic with hands-on activities about igloos, inuksuit and the Northern Lights. A separate Métis dot art resource, winter ornaments and classroom bulletin board materials are also included.

Students learn through reading, reflection, science, art and building activities while exploring both traditional knowledge and present-day Indigenous life.

Five Indigenous Winter Lessons and Activities

1. Inuit Culture and Life

Introduce students to Inuit culture, traditions and contemporary communities. Students learn about traditional ways of living, connections to the land and sea, life in Canada’s Arctic and Inuit communities today.

This lesson also introduces igloos and inuksuit while helping students understand that Inuit cultures are diverse, living and continually evolving.

2. Igloo Lesson and Building Activity

Students learn why and how Inuit traditionally built igloos and how their construction demonstrates extensive knowledge of snow, insulation and the Arctic environment.

This resource includes three pages of learning, reflection questions and a lesson plan. Students then use modelling clay to complete a hands-on igloo building activity.

3. Inukshuk Lesson and Art Project

Teach students about the history, cultural purposes and different forms of inuksuit. Students learn that these stone structures have served specific purposes on the land and are more than decorative rock formations.

After the lesson, students create a painted inukshuk art project using sponges and paint.

4. Winter Métis Dot Art

Introduce students to Métis beadwork and the floral art traditions for which many Métis artists are known. Students then create a winter dot-art project inspired by the appearance of colourful beadwork.

The resource includes a lesson plan, individual student activity, winter templates, Christmas ornament options and a winter bulletin board set.

5. Northern Lights Lesson and Art Project

Combine science, culture and creativity while learning about the Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis.

Students explore the science behind the Northern Lights, learn about Inuit perspectives and stories connected to them, and create a colourful Northern Lights art project. Bulletin board materials are included for displaying completed artwork.
