Learn About Indigenous Storytelling

This Indigenous storytelling lesson helps students understand that stories can carry histories, teachings, knowledge and relationships across generations. Students are encouraged to listen carefully, reflect on what they have learned and recognize that culturally meaningful stories should be approached with care.

The lesson also explains that there is not one universal Indigenous creation story. Turtle Island stories are connected to particular Nations and may differ in their characters, events, language and teachings.

Turtle Island Reflection and Writing Activities

After completing the lesson, students respond to reflection questions that encourage thoughtful engagement with the story and its teachings.

The creative storytelling activity allows students to develop an original story while exploring setting, characters, relationships and the natural world. Rather than asking students to recreate or claim an Indigenous creation story, the activity provides an opportunity to practise their own storytelling skills.

Students can then complete the Turtle Island writing craft to share their learning and creative response. Finished projects can be used for a classroom display or Indigenous education bulletin board.
